Thirumarayoor is a quaint village located approximately 5 km from Piravom in the Edakkattuvayal Panchayath of Ernakulam District. Devotees can access it via Veliyanadu from Peppathy junction on the Mulanthuruthy – Piravam road. The distance from Ernakulam is 35 km. Thirumarayoor Sree Rama Swami temple, an exquisitely sculpted ancient temple, resides on a small piece of land surrounded by verdant paddy fields. The Mealppazhoor Mana, the ancestral home of Aryamba, the mother of Jagadguru Adi Shankara, is situated nearby (2 km from Thirumarayoor). Melppazhoor is now known as Adishankara Nilayam and is under the administration of the Chinmaya International Foundation. It is believed that Adi Shankara composed the Sree Rama Bhujanga Stotra in praise of Thirumarayoor Sree Rama. In the Phalasruthi, he mentions that this stotra is Vedasaram (essence of Vedas).
There are several interpretations regarding the name Thirumarayoor. ‘Mara’ signifies Veda, hence Thirumarayoor means the place resonating with sacred Vedic Mantras. Thirumarayoor village was once part of Vedanadu (Vendanadu), a Namboodiri Upagrama (the village temple of Vedanad Gramam is Choottanikkara Bhagavathi Temple). The name Thirumarayoor signifies its association with Vedas and Vedanadu. Another tale is connected to the Bali Vadha from Ramayana. It is said that Bhagavan Sri Rama shot his arrow to slay Bali while hiding behind a tree at Thirumarayoor. In traditional language, a hiding place is called “Mara”. Thus, as Bhagavan Srirama concealed himself and defeated Bali, the place earned the name Thirumarayoor. Consequently, the deity in this temple, Srirama, embodies the aspect of God attempting to vanquish Bali. Another interpretation suggests that the name “Thirumarayoor” originated from an event in the epic Ramayana. When Sita was enticed by a golden deer, which was actually Mareecha disguised as a deer as part of Ravana’s scheme to distract Rama and abduct Sita, the deer vanished at this location. In Malayalam, the word for “disappear” is “marayuka”. The prefix “Thiru” denotes something related to God.
Every day, the temple reverently performs its pooja, meticulously following traditional rituals and schedules to pay homage to the deities in accordance with ancient customs.
